It is over a third of the way in before Matthews begins to impersonate her mother and the mounting coincidences required for the whole premise to work are rather ridiculous. Jessie Matthews does okay in the lead role and the film is littered with imaginative Busby Berkeley style song and dance routines, but the comedy side of the film is very undernourished. Convinced to impersonate her dead mother, the illegitimate daughter of a beloved singer worries about the ramifications of her ruse as her mother's former associates grow suspicious in this musical comedy. (first viewing, online) ★★Įvergreen (1934). The insensitive ending also leads a bitter taste in the mouth, though the filmmakers no doubt never intended to offend, and this is reasonably engaging while it lasts. The 'who should she chose?' story here is incredibly simplistic though and hardly Sophie's Choice. Farrell has a memorable fight on top of a telegraph pole early on too. Playing a character three quarters her actual age, Gaynor is convincingly youthful yet mature when it comes to love, while Charles Farrell is charming as the crippled veteran who does some amazing things with his wheelchair (thanks in part to subtly sped-up footage). Romanced by two very different war veterans, a teenager is torn between a crippled soldier who she loves more and an able-bodied but cruder gentleman who her mother prefers in this silent drama starring Janet Gaynor. ★★★★ = loved it /// ★★★ = liked it a lot ~7/10 /// ★★ = has interesting elements ~6/10 /// ★ = did very little for me ~5/10 and lower It would be awesome if you could also take some time to comment on everyone else's viewings (if you're like me, "real life" sometimes gets in the way, so no need to feel obliged).
